Tools needed: Good sharp scissors, rotary cutter, mat and ruler or square. A sewing machine with a walking foot if possible.
Basic Instructions:
Sew seams ½” - 1” seam allowance. Seams should be on the front side of fabric. Use 100% cotton, flannel or denim only. Clip seams between ¼ and ¾
of an inch apart. Clipping depth should be approximately 1/8” from seam. Seams can be sewn in an ”X” or a “+” or even a “◊” formation. We have even
done a modified “X” depending on the size of the block. These seams are for stabilizing or quilting fabrics and batt, if used, so they don’t shift.
- Choose the size of quilt or throw you wish to make.
- Collect old clothes, jeans and flannel shirts or fabric yardage etc. (Split jeans on the inside seam to open up for cutting ease).
- Decide on design and cut blocks, allowing for ½ - 1” seam allowances.
- Batting can be used or not, your choice.
- Cut squares. Sew fabrics together to stabilize or quilt.
- Sew blocks together and clip all seams.
- Quilt bindings can either be frayed & clipped or do a regular bias binding.
- Wash as often as desired to get the effect you want or until quilt stops shedding.
- Remember you are fraying each seam. About 1/8 of the total quilt yardage will shed. Empty the lint filters every 5 minutes or so you will get 3-5” inches of lint
or frayed fabric on the first washing.
- When using denim be careful not to use it on both sides of your quilt, it will make your finished quilt VERY HEAVY.
Funky Rag Pillows Dotted Pattern Outline
Lay out four pieces of desired scraps backs together. Simply trace desired size of heart, (remember to leave seam allowance). Cut out and then cut in
half along the center line. Lay out your funky heart front and back in a mixed up checkerboard 4 patch or half heart pieces.
Sew down center seams to form a “+” sign across the heart. With backs together, sew around most of the heart leaving an opening to stuff.
Clip all seams to fray with about ¼” to ½” clips. Stuff as tight as possible with stuffing. Sew the opening closed, and wash as desired.
Bias Pillows or Other items. Cut strips 3, 4, and 5 inches wide of varied fabrics. Sew into strips. Clip seams. Layout
pattern or square (grain lines on bias) with frayed edges facing each other. Cut out pattern leaving seam allowance desired. Sew outside edge to stabilize clip and
wash.
